 | Project Description & Work Performed: Resulting from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the flood waters that inundated the city due to numerous levee and flood wall breaches this project evolved as one of Cajun’s many Emergency Response Projects. Cajun’s scope included:
- Mobilized assessment team within 2 – hours of directive via Helicopters to determine means and methods of mobilization and locating a suitable staging area.
- Procured 125 portable diesel driven pumps in sizes from 12 – inch to 42 – inch
- Procured various types of piping systems for discharge of pumped flood waters
- Procured over 230 pieces of construction equipment
- Mobilized first crew within 24 – hours of directive and increased crew capabilities hourly as directives mounted
- Multiple crews worked 3 shifts and 24 – hours per day.
- Installed pumps and piping at various locations of deep ponding and at pump stations that were damaged by hurricane
- Provided crews with temporary onsite housing, meals, and transportation
- Provided Armed Security Forces to secure areas so our crews could safely mobilize and complete work; Federal, State and Local officials being inundated with enormous rescue and evacuation efforts of those stranded in New Orleans
Challenges:
- City was under mandatory evacuation in the aftermath of the storm due to floodwaters and no utilities
- Many work sites for unwatering were inaccessible by land and roads due to flood waters
- There were no support services such as fuel, housing, food, and water
- Communications via telephone and cell phones were initially nonexistent
- Due to the massive volume of pumps, piping and construction equipment it was necessary to set up multiple staging areas in and outside of New Orleans
Key Accomplishments:
- Completed project in one – third the initial estimated time and worked over 32,000 manhours with no lost time accidents or OSHA recordables
- Set up mobile command post and satellite communications link within 72 – hours
- Supported project’s enormous consumption (>5,000 gal./hr.) of fuel with marine based equipment
